ONLINE GENERAL LECTURE ON 'FINDING PHOTOGRAPHIC PRACTICE IN SOUTHEAST ASIA': A COLLABORATION BETWEEN AMERICAN INSTITUTE FOR INDONESIAN STUDIES (AIFIS) AND PHOTOGRAPHY DEPARTMENT, FSMR ISI YOGYAKARTA

On June 23, 2020, the Department of Photography, Faculty of Recording Media Arts (FSMR), Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta will hold a Webinar via Zoom with speaker Brian Arnold (American Photographer) and Charles Fox (Assistant Professor of PhotographyNottingham Trent University, UK) and Lecturer of Photography Department FSMR ISI Yogyakarta, Pamungkas Wahyu Setiyanto, M.Sn. with moderator Adya Arsita, S.S., M.A. The program is a collaboration between the American Institute for Indonesian Studies (AIFIS) and the Photography Department FSMR ISI Yogyakarta, initiated by AIFIS Yogyakarta Program Manager, Faishol Adib. AIFIS itself is a consortium of 24 American Universities that encourages and develops a scholarly exchange between Indonesian and American researchers with an interest in Indonesian studies.

It is encouraging for the Department of Photography that AIFIS promotes education and research conducted by American researchers in Indonesia and facilitates visits by Indonesian researchers to the United States so that the establishment of cooperation between Indonesian and American researchers can provide opportunities for lecturers in the Department of Photography and even students to get to know and research the photographic climate in America. The organization, which is located at the Center for Southeast Asian Social Studies (PSSAT), PAU UGM Building East Wing 1st Floor, Jalan Teknika Utara, Barek, Yogyakarta, provides a new view that Indonesian culture is a vast fresh land to be researched by foreign countries, as well as researchers in Indonesia because it is hoped that researchers, especially photography scholars, can be given the opportunity to conduct research in America and facilitated by AIFIS so that they can add new discourse about the development of world photography.

According to the Dean of the Faculty of Recording Media Arts (FSMR), Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta, Dr. Irwandi, M.Sn., this event is a very interesting opportunity for lecturers and especially students of the Photography Department. "For lecturers, we can share perspectives with foreign lecturers and for students can add new discourse about the practices of the world of photography from various countries so that our hope is that this event can be carried out continuously so that it has a good impact on both parties, especially for the Department of Photography, FSMR, and ISI Yogyakarta," said the Dean of FSMR. The Department of Photography highly appreciates the cooperation carried out by AIFIS because it shows that the Department of Photography ISI Yogyakarta is increasingly taken into account in the world photography scene.

The Photography Department on this occasion will be host at the webinar event with the theme 'Finding Photographic Practice in Southeast Asia'. The speakers will describe the climate of Asian photography practice from their perspectives. This interesting event is expected to attract the attention of photography students and activists, especially lecturers of the Photography Department, so that they are moved not only to conduct research domestically but also to conduct research abroad.
