SCREENING AND DISCUSSION OF A SHORT FICTION FILM FROM AUSTRIA ENTITLED "FREIGANG" FILM AND TELEVISION STUDY PROGRAM

Tuesday, February 17, 2020, the Film and Television Study Program, Faculty of Recording Media Arts (FSMR), Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta had two guests.  filmmaker from Austria. The occasion was held screening and discussion of a short fiction movie titled Freigang (Day Release) which took place in Studio 2, FTV Study Program, FSMR. As speakers, the scriptwriters and producers of the film were present, Sebastian Schmidl (Producer and Scriptwriter) and Victoria Herbig (Producer). They come from one of the film schools in Austria, namely, Filmakademie Wien: Institut Für Austrian movie Und fernsehen. The film itself has won several awards at various international festivals, including the Austrian Film Award 2020 for the category of Best Short Film and Queen Palm International Film Festival (2020) Second Quarter Gold Award for the category of Best Short Film anyway.

This public lecture was attended by students from across generations, but dominated by students of the fiction film production class. They were very enthusiastic in attending this public lecture. Also present were the Head of Film and Television Study Program, Agnes Widyasmoro, S.Sn, M.A, Head of Photography Study Program Dr. Irwandi, M.Sn and several lecturers in the Film and Television Study Program, FSMR, ISI Yogyakarta. From the internal side, it was moderated by the department secretary, Arif Sulistiyono, M.Sn, while from the guest side it was hosted by Sebastian's good friend, Andre Moedanton, an art activist and documentary filmmaker.

After the movie screening session which lasted about 35 minutes, it was followed by a movie discussion session which was very fluid. The students were also impressed with the movie that had been screened. Moreover, the plot of the movie is simple and packed with strong visual language, as well as its universal message. The enthusiasm of students who asked questions made the class more lively. Various questions arose, among others, related to how the technical process of film production and the aesthetic side of the film. There were also other general questions related to the Austrian film industry. Sebastian and his colleague Victoria also enthusiastically answered various questions in detail. The limited time made the discussion that had lasted for 45 minutes had to stop. The event was closed with a group photo session. This kind of event is very valuable and makes students more open to works from outside that can inspire the learning process within the Film and TV study program, FSMR, ISI Yogyakarta. (DW)
