International Photo Exhibition "Borderless": A Realization of PSA Worldwide's Collaboration with the Department of Photography, FSMR, ISI Yogyakarta

"Connecting people" is one of the strengths of photography, especially in today's almost "borderless" world. Photographic Society of America (PSA) Worldwide PSA as an international organization has connected its members in more than 80 countries from all over the world with a commitment to celebrate and appreciate photography. In addition, PSA also connects with other photography organizations and communities around the world.

In an effort to connect communities, PSA Worldwide together with Art Photography of Indonesia - API (PSA club member), in collaboration with the Photography Department, Faculty of Recording Media Arts (FSMR), Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta (ISI Yogyakarta) organized PSA's first international print exhibition in Indonesia with the theme of "Borderless" at the R.J. Katamsi Gallery, ISI Yogyakarta. PSA Worldwide is determined to always promote the art of photography and encourage the younger generation to express their creativity through the camera lens. The Chairman of the Exhibition Committee and one of the curators of the "Borderless" exhibition, Oscar Samaratungga, S.E., M.Sn., who is currently the Head of the Photography Department (Kajur) FSMR ISI Yogyakarta, hopes that this exhibition can provide information, education, motivation, and become a form of visual communication from various cultures and styles of creativity to broaden the horizons of photography and art for those who see it.

Exhibition preparation "Borderless" is being conducted in the midst of a global pandemic, so the theme of the exhibition, which implies that there are no real boundaries in human existence, has taken on a new relevance. The pandemic has transformed human interactions as physical differences and distances are no longer a significant barrier. Thus, virtual communication plays an increasingly important role in connecting people. As the flow of information, technology, knowledge, and cultural exchange continues to increase and become almost inevitable, PSA Worldwide continues to adapt to the changes to interact with its members and all photographers from around the world who share the same interests.

An international photography exhibition titled "Borderless" held at Galeri R.J. Katamsi owned by ISI Yogyakarta was officially opened on site by the Rector of ISI Yogyakarta, Prof. Dr. M. Agus Burhan, M.Hum. and the President of PSA Worldwide for the 2021-2023 period, J.R. Schnelzer, MS, FPSA, MPSA2, EFIAP also welcomed through Zoom and live streaming on the Youtube channel, virtually attended by faculty and leaders of FMSR ISI Yogyakarta and PSA members from all over the world on Tuesday, August 31, 2021. On this special occasion, PSA Worldwide sent its representative, Agatha Anne Bunanta, S.E., M.B.A. HonCNPS, Hon SSS, FPSA, GMPSA, GPSA, EFIAP/p, ARPS, GPU-Cr4, GPU-VIP3, E.FPSI, A.FPSI*** who serves as a member of PSA. International Relationships Vice President (IRVP) who also happens to be the Director of Art Photography of Indonesia (API) is also the curator of the "Borderless" exhibition. 

In order to maintain health protocols during the pandemic, invited guests who attended offline were limited to the Rector of ISI Yogyakarta, Dean of FSMR ISI Yogyakarta, Vice Dean I FSMR ISI Yogyakarta, Head of the Photography Department, FSMR ISI Yogyakarta, and Agatha Anne Bunanta as IRVP PSA and several senior photography practitioners and experts.

International photography exhibition "Borderless" representing all types and genres of photography as a form of artistic expression. The 243 photos on display consist of 188 photos from 188 PSA members (66 of whom are from Indonesia) in 60 countries, and 55 photos from 55 photographers (consisting of lecturers, students, and colleagues/campus partners from ISI Yogyakarta). The purpose of this exhibition is to publicize the photographic works of lecturers and students of the Photography Department, FSMR ISI Yogyakarta together with other Indonesian photographers and PSA members spread from all over the world in an international level exhibition event. 

Dean of FSMR, ISI Yogyakarta, Dr. Irwandi, M.Sn. emphasized that this exhibition was also held as a form of international cooperation between the Department of Photography, FSMR ISI Yogyakarta and PSA Worldwide, so that in the future it would open wider networks to other international photography communities. "I hope this international exhibition can broaden the horizons of photography and art of all Indonesian photographers, especially the students of the Photography Department at FSMR ISI Yogyakarta," added the Dean. FSMR. Meanwhile, Vice Dean I of FSMR ISI Yogyakarta, Dr. Edial Rusli, S.E., M.Sn. said that this exhibition could be considered as an achievement in fulfilling one of the Main Performance Indicators (KPI) of Higher Education, namely lecturers and students can exhibit their photographic works through a professional curatorial process by external curators, in this case by Agatha Anne Bunanta, S.E., M.B.A - Vice President for International Relations from Indonesia. "PSA is committed to encouraging students of the Photography Department to express their creativity through photography. Do not be insecure and afraid to enter the international arena," said Agatha Anne Bunanta, S.E., M.B.A. She hopes that this exhibition will open up insights and motivate the younger generation, or in this case, students of the Photography Department to be more creative in their work. This exhibition will also be a place to introduce young photographers who participate in this exhibition to the international community. PSA hopes that this collaboration will open up networking and cooperation and wider opportunities in the international world both for the photography department and the international community. Although we are currently in the midst of a pandemic, now is the time to start always thinking positively in our work so as to produce great and creative works that can spur ourselves to be more critical in creating works. Agatha also added, "Art is a 'tool' that can be used as a way to express ourselves positively and creatively in times of concern such as during this pandemic.
