Both complement each other, making the travel narrative more complete. Visual documentation, in this case photography, is not just evidence of the journey that has been made, but also a bridge that connects the two. traveler with the viewer so that the essence of a journey can be understood. In Indonesia, we know Don Hasman, an adventurer and photographer who is very consistent in documenting travel comprehensively. His experience and commitment in documenting every trip has made him known to a wide audience, across generations.

Luckily, the Photography Study Program, Faculty of Recording Media Arts (FSMR), Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta, had the opportunity to present him at a Public Lecture entitled "The Road is Still Long, Travel Documentation with Don Hasman" in Auvi Room, FSMR, Friday (7/2/2020). In the public lecture, Don Hasman explained his story while traveling from Saint Jean Pied de Port, Southern France, to Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, Spain, along about 1,000 kilometers, for 35 days. The journey is a pilgrimage commonly done by Christians to commemorate a figure in Christianity, James, who after his death, his body was carried by his followers to Santiago on foot.

Along the way, Don photographed anything he found interesting, from the architecture, the people he met, to the atmosphere of worship and pilgrimage activities. The documentation becomes a record of events that will become a historical archive, at least for himself. In fact, photographs from a trip can provide tangible evidence of a changing world. Therefore, he suggested that every travel documentation be made honestly. Honesty in every work is something that every photographer should have because it determines how we value others. For Don Hasman, travel is an attempt at self-reflection. Every human being needs contemplation to understand the true meaning of humanity. As a Muslim, he traveled through the history of Christians, yet he was warmly welcomed in every place he visited. He felt the true power of humanity.
