TERASHARING: KEEPING THE DISCUSSION GOING DURING THE PANDEMIC

The spirit to learn and add insight continues to be encouraged by Terasharing, one of the Student Working Groups (KKM) in the Photography Study Program, Faculty of Recording Media Arts (FSMR), Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta. During the Learning From Home (BDR) period enforced at ISI Yogyakarta, Terasharing continues to hold virtual or online discussions with the "#" program.sharingfromhome".

Until now, six speakers have been invited and shared their knowledge and experience in the online discussion. Starting from Prof. Dr. Yasraf Amir Piliang, M.A who presented the discussion material "a Post Photography Theory", Sohrab Hura with the material "on Personal and Photography", Novan Jemmi Andrea, M.Sn., who shared his experience on journalistic photography, Alan Ridho with Commercial Photography, Arif Furqan with "Unhistoried", and Reuters Indonesia photographer Willy Kurniawan, with the material Coverage in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In one of the online discussion sessions, Prof. Dr. Yasraf Amir Piliang, M.A. explained that photography is one of the cultural products of the production era. Reality is produced with technology, in this case the camera, so there is one critic, Walter Benjamin in his book 'Illumination' says that photography is part of "Mechanical Reproduction", meaning that reality is depicted through replicas. Photographic technology is different from the original paintings of the artist. Then, photography that can be printed and produced so much is it relevant to talk about originality in photography? Perhaps the originality lies in the taking not the printing so it cannot be called original. Walter Benjamin used the term "Aura of Reality"For example, the original Affandi painting with its strokes and the smell of the painting is different, but with digital photos, Affandi's paintings can be printed into calendars that will definitely lose their aura.

Furthermore, Prof. Yasraf also explained the Theory of post-photography Prof. Yasraf also explained about the models of Hipperealitas through the example of beauty product advertisements that display visuals of women but do not correspond to reality or called Hipperealitas because what is in the photo does not fully represent reality. Prof. Yasraf also explained about the models of Hipperealitas, one of which is the result of the documentation of the Iraqi and American war journalists. Before the war, President George Walker Bush said that this war was a humanitarian war without casualties. CNN broadcasted the war with no casualties and only showed destroyed buildings, split streets, and burnt houses. Then is the broadcast from CNN reality? According to Baudrillard, there is no hidden reality because the photos are only taken with the concept of a humanitarian war without casualties, so the photos are the Hyperreality of the actual events.

Post-Photography according to Prof. Yasraf is a combination of representation and simulation of reality that transcends reality itself. One example is the simulation of digital techniques that change objects in the actual reality recorded by the camera. Thus, one of the tasks of photography students is to critically question and examine what is reality in the world of photography? Does photography produce a new aura? Is the simulation of everyday events recorded by digital cameras included in the representation? He hopes that the theory he has presented can be well developed by students.

The chairman of KKM Terasharing, Muhammad Alfariz, hopes that after New Normal or the Covid-19 Pandemic ends, Terasharing will be even more advanced and more enthusiastic in holding every discussion session. Currently, there are various kinds of facilities for using applications that make it possible to conduct group face-to-face meetings without being limited to distance so that it does not prevent discussion spaces even though they are not face-to-face.
