ACTIVITIES OF THE FILM AND TELEVISION STUDENT ASSOCIATION OF YOGYAKARTA SUARA MERDEKA: MOVIE NIGHT, DISCUSSION, AND MUSIC

In commemoration of Indonesian Republic Independence Day, the Film and Television Student Association of the Indonesian Art Institute (ISI) Yogyakarta is holding a joint screening event of the film “Battle Of Surabaya” on Sunday, August 24, 2025. This activity is part of the Ministry of Culture program held simultaneously in 16 cities in Indonesia.

The event began with a screening of the 99-minute film “Battle of Surabaya,” which tells the story of the struggle of the people of Surabaya during the revolution. The film was able to ignite nationalist spirit while also evoking a range of emotions in the audience. Cheers, enthusiasm, as well as sadness and grief were evident from the audience who witnessed the film's profound message: “war never brings true victory, only suffering.”

After the film screening, the event continued with an experimental music performance by Nanang Garuda, an artist and academic from ISI Yogyakarta, themed “Dancing at the Door of Independence.” Through his music, Nanang invited the audience to reflect on the meaning of independence and the importance of free and creative expression after the nation's independence.

In addition to musical performances, interactive discussion sessions were also held. These discussions provided a space for students and the attending public to exchange views on the film, its history, and its relevance to the nation's current conditions. This activity is expected not only to be entertaining but also a moment of reflection for the younger generation to better appreciate independence, while fostering a spirit of innovation through new, creative, and critical approaches.
