THE DYNAMICS OF YOGYAKARTA CITY IN STREET MYTHOLOGY WITH SHAMOW'EL RAMA SURYA IN TERASHARING FORUM

To increase student knowledge in the field of photography, the student discussion group of the Department of Photography, Faculty of Recording Media (FSMR), Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta, namely UKM Terasharing, the Recording Media (FSMR), Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta, namely UKM Terasharing, invited Shamow 'el Rama Surya, a photography instructor from Lighthouse Photo Institute. He has published several books, including among them are "Yang Kuat Yang Kalah" (1996) and "A Certain Grace" (2015). Shamow 'el Rama Surya is also an artist who has exhibited at the "Jakarta Biennale 2017: Jiwa", and on February 28th exhibited at SaRanG Building & Kedai Kebun Forum with the title "HOME - Yogyakarta: Street Mythology". Mythology'.

Artist Talk The afternoon was moderated by the Terasharing, kak Aji Susanto Anom. Shamoew'el Rama Surya who is usually called Sham is a photographer who has published several photobook that speaks and conceptualizes photo stories. One of his books titled "Yang Kuat Yang Kalah" can be used as a good photo story reference. In opportunity that afternoon, Sham shared his various views and methods in displaying photo stories. His skills as a photojournalist for HAI magazine and Fotomedia in the past has led him to compile his black-and-white photo works into a reference for his black-and-white photo works into a reference for young photographers and photojournalists including Aji Susanto as the moderator of the discussion.

Sham's strength in storytelling and philosophizing through his visual frames is also seen in 'Yogyakarta: Street Mythology', a series of photo story which displays the dynamics of the city of Yogyakarta as a cultural entity. The symbols of freedom against the backdrop of the changing political conditions in 1998 are presented in an interesting yet simple way.

In this discussion, Sham shares the background of the creation of his book 'Yogyakarta: Street Mithology'. His reference or visual form and photographic approach was inspired by Sebastiao Salgado, a Brazilian photographer, specializing in photojournalism and black and white documentary photos. Rama Surya also participated in several discussions and workshops during the process of creating this book and shared his experience with the students on how ideally a photo book should be created.

The conclusion of the discussion was that a photographer has subjectivity in objects related to real space and time. He also believes that the city of Yogyakarta is a space with complexity that is very interesting to be recorded and made into a photo book. This is because everything is in the city of Yogyakarta, from ethnic, cultural, religious, social, and globalization issues that occur today. (HMJ FT)

Foto tersebut menggunakan pendekatan street art (mural) dan didiskusikan dengan para peserta Terasharing di Gedung Jurusan Fotografi, FSMR ISI Yogyakarta, pada Selasa (25/02/2020).
