FROM IMAGE TO PHOTOGRAPHIC IMAGINATION IN THE EYES OF EDIAL RUSLI

Mahacaraka Academia, in collaboration with Focus Nusantara and the Photography Study Program, Faculty of Recording Media Arts (FSMR), Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta again held a Webinar via Zoom with speaker Dr. Edial Rusli, S.E., M.Sn. In the webinar which took place on Saturday, May 16, 2020, the theme was "From Imagination to Photographic Imagination".

The Dean of FSMR, ISI Yogyakarta, Dr. Irwandi, M.Sn. gave a speech by stating that the webinar material which is the result of Dr. Edial Rusli, M.Sn.'s research over the years is a different material from photography material in general, which mostly questions technical areas. This material is an elaboration of the science-based creative process that is part of the process of creating expression photography works.

In the webinar, Dr. Edial Rusli, S.E., M.Sn. or often called Pak Ed, explained how the process of creating photography can be formulated through the combination of various creative ideas, insights or knowledge, and certain techniques. The combination of various photographic and non-photographic insights is an effort to strengthen the idea of creating a photo work to produce an original and different expression photo work. In his presentation, Mr. Ed described the process he went through in making expression photographs using the montage technique. From hundreds of photos, they are combined to produce a photo that has a unique and intriguing look. Through his technical choices, Mr. Ed enhances the imagination related to the social issues that he is concerned about, namely the Malioboro area in Yogyakarta. Starting from an image in the form of a photo work, Mr. Ed builds his artistic imagination. He chooses and applies technical photography skills and knowledge. In fact, he strengthens his imagination by bringing the creation process closer to the scientific methods of science, so that the observations made to explore social messages related to the objects of his photos become valid. The technical choice of montage results in a unique visual form, while observation and research using scientific methods produce useful data to strengthen the message to be embedded in each of his photographic works.
