At 97 years old, Soedjai Kartasasmita awarded doctorate honoris causa from the University of North Sumatra. He is credited with initiating the technology and establishing the first palm cooking oil factory in Indonesia in 1977. This step overcame the shortage of supply of edible oil, which at that time was only made from coconut.

Soedjai Kartasasmita is a plantation expert with a passion for photography. He serves as the chairman of the Jakarta Photographers Society, and he is a role model in the world of photography. Every year Soedjai Kartasasmita provides educational donations for students who have academic achievements, with the hope that students who receive educational assistance can motivate them to always be diligent in gaining knowledge in their fields.
