The Faculty of Recording Media Arts (FSMR) of Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta on November 24 and 25, 2025 held a hybrid annual seminar. “Creative Hybridity: Integration of Recorded Media Arts in Multidisciplinary Collaboration for Innovation” is the theme of this 2025 Recorded Media Arts Seminar. The phenomenon of cultural hybridization is actually quite old and still growing today. Modern globalization that continues to develop is an illustration of this stage. The middle class is a major new area of hybrid development, with new modernities emerging from the expansion of new markets and its socio-cultural practices evolving in the context of migration and diaspora. It is true that hybridization, which can transcend time and location, is an inevitable phenomenon in civilization. The integration of Recorded Media Arts in Multidisciplinary Collaboration for Innovation in this case presents tremendous potential for the creation of innovative art, as it brings together a deep knowledge of art and artistic sensibilities with a deep understanding of language and technological possibilities. At the same time, being situated at the confluence of different fields of practice and research grounded in diverse epistemologies and approaches, interdisciplinary collaborations do more than just shape new ways of making art: they contribute to synergies between the fields of art and technology, marking points of intersection, blurring boundaries and influencing their evolution.
The sentence “Creative Hybridity: Integration of Recorded Media Arts in Multidisciplinary Collaboration. For Innovation” was chosen as the theme representing these art and media issues and trends. This theme was selected to emphasize that the research to be presented is based on the framework that the integration of recorded media arts in multidisciplinary collaboration drives innovation through in-depth analysis of interdisciplinary efforts. Together, the interdisciplinary art landscape and the interdisciplinary knowledge landscape contribute to opening and pushing the boundaries of artistic thought and creation, reconsidering taken-for-granted assumptions, and generating radical new art forms.
This theme was born out of the realization that today's creative processes no longer stand within the boundaries of traditional disciplines. The concept of creative hybridity asserts that contemporary art-including recorded media art-evolves through cross-cultural, cross-technological and cross-methodological encounters. Hybridity is not just a mixing process, but a third space that gives birth to new forms of knowledge, aesthetics, and artistic practice, as stated by the Dean of FSMR ISI Yogyakarta, Dr. Edial Rusli, S.E., M.Sn. Furthermore, according to the Dean of FSMR ISI Yogyakarta, this academic seminar is a form of FSMR's commitment to creating a scientific ecosystem that encourages renewal and innovation. Through the call for papers, we invite academics, students, practitioners, and art observers to contribute their best ideas. From this opportunity, we hope that research will be born that has a clear contribution to the development of the science of recording media arts, while expanding the horizons of interdisciplinary practice in Indonesia.
The 2025 Media Arts Seminar presents Konfir Kabo, Founder of Project Eleven & Art Collector, and Dr. Arif Eko Suprihono, M.Hum, a Lecturer at the Faculty of Media Arts, Indonesian Institute of the Arts Yogyakarta. The opening and speaker presentations will be held offline with limited invitations in the Auvi Room, 3rd Floor of the FSMR Dean's Building, and online via Zoom Meeting for all panel sessions and for audience participants. The event is planned to be officially opened by the Rector of ISI Yogyakarta, Dr. Irwandi, S.Sn., M.Sn.
The screening process has been conducted since early October 2025 through an abstract selection process. Out of 93 applicants who submitted abstracts, 65 abstracts passed. Applicants who passed were then asked to submit their full papers and present them in parallel seminar sessions on November 24th and 25th, 2025. Subsequently, these papers will be published in ISBN-indexed proceedings. Finally, 8 best papers will be selected to be included in the SINTA-accredited journals under the auspices of FSMR ISI Yogyakarta, namely Jurnal REKAM, Jurnal JAGS, Sense, and Specta.
